a Lifetime Passion for Photography

Hello and welcome to my website. My name is Jon Harrison, a Yorkshireman now living in the Outer Hebrides on the beautiful Isle of Lewis with my wife Rachel and our two dogs.

As an award winning photographer of ‘Digital Photography Magazines’ first photographer of the year award back in 2007, I like to think I can make an image to a decent high standard. The lavish awards ceremony took place in London where I was presented with my prize, some wonderful Canon professional equipment, from the editor of the magazine Dan Lezano.

Around the same time I was earning a living as a professional wedding & portrait photographer. Unfortunately I had to give this up after a relatively short period due to family illness.

I have also had images printed in other publications, for example, Amateur Photographer magazine, B+W Photography magazine and ‘Hotshots’ - ‘Shot of the Month’ in Digital Camera magazine way back in September 2006.

My love affair with photography goes back to my early teenage years, when I got my first serious camera. This was a 35mm Ricoh 500g rangefinder with a brilliant 40mm f2.8 lens, I still own this very camera but unfortunately I’ve worn it out so it no longer functions correctly. I do enjoy most forms of photography, however my real passion comes from the landscape, fine-art still life and my absolute favourite, moody black & white.

Now in my sixties, I have seen many changes to this fantastic creative pastime. Initially learning the fundamentals using film cameras, the Ricoh 5oog and the fully manual Olympus om1n for example, I now enjoy the speed and ease of digital image making with a range of Fujifilm equipment. I don’t intend giving up film or ‘analogue’ as it seems to be increasingly referred to, indeed my collection of these cameras has grown considerably over the past few years! Although I do not have a darkroom, I still develop my own B&W film at home, digitising the negatives with either my Epson scanner or a digital camera.

Creating images with my phone is also an option these days as quality has improved enormously over the last few years. I recently printed an image at A3 from an iPhone 16e, the quality of which was way beyond my expectations! like the old quote says “the best camera is the one you have with you” or at least something along those lines.
